I’m Sam, the coach behind Tarring Strength. I’m recently qualified, and while coaching is a new endeavour for me, strength and fitness have been part of my life for a long time.
My coaching style has been shaped less by the gym floor and more by the realities of life. Work, family, injuries, ageing, and the shifting nature of priorities vying for our attention. It’s made me value plans that can adapt, progress that’s sustainable, and an approach that meets people where they are. It's given me perspective on the importance of empathy, patience, clarity, and a focus on what’s useful for the person in front of me.
I believe good coaching blends structure with flexibility, theory with context, and support with honesty. My role is to help you find a version of training that works. One that supports your goals, fits your life, and moves you forward.
Tarring Strength came about because I believe strength and fitness can play a meaningful role in people’s lives. Not just in terms of performance or aesthetics, but also as something that supports how they move, feel, and function, both day to day and long term.
I feel much of the fitness industry misses that. People are sold rigid plans with no regard for dynamic lives. Accountability as a feature when what is required is support and guidance. Binary thinking that assumes you’re either doing it right or not at all. It creates pressure, confusion, and unrealistic expectations, and often gets in the way of lasting progress.
That’s why they aim at Tarring Strength is to provide an environment where people feel comfortable enough to train, supported enough to keep going, challenged enough to make progress and mostly importantly, enjoy the process.
